Sub-Tasks

Tasks can have sub-tasks — child items nested under a parent task. This lets you break complex tasks into smaller, manageable steps.

Creating Sub-Tasks

  1. Open a parent task's detail page
  2. Use the "Add sub-task" creator within the task
  3. Sub-tasks can themselves have sub-tasks — there's no limit on nesting depth

Sub-Task Rules

  • Sub-tasks inherit the parent's project and goal connection
  • Parent-child time periods must be compatible: a parent task's period must be equal to or larger than its children's periods. For example, a weekly parent can have daily sub-tasks, but a daily parent cannot have weekly sub-tasks
  • Sub-tasks are displayed as an indented tree under their parent, with visual connector lines showing the hierarchy

Completing with Sub-Tasks

When you complete a parent task that has sub-tasks, a dialog asks:

  • "Only this task" — completes just the parent. Sub-tasks remain unchanged
  • "Complete sub-tasks" — completes the parent and all descendant tasks in one action

TIP

Rewards stack — you earn gold and XP for every task that changes from incomplete to complete. Completing a parent with 5 sub-tasks earns rewards for all 6 items.

Changing a Sub-Task's Parent

You can reorganize your task hierarchy:

  • Unlink a sub-task from its parent, making it an independent root task
  • Change a sub-task's parent to a different task

INFO

Changing parents is validated for time period compatibility (child period must be equal to or smaller than parent) and no circular references (a task can't be its own ancestor).

Breaking Down a Complex Task

  1. Create the main task (e.g., "Prepare presentation")
  2. Open its detail page
  3. Add sub-tasks: "Research topic", "Create slides", "Write speaker notes", "Practice delivery"
  4. Set appropriate priority and difficulty for each
  5. Work through sub-tasks individually, or complete the parent to finish everything at once
