Journaling

Journaling is Scope's reflection tool - free-write and guided entries pinned to a time period, with optional AI analysis that turns your writing into real-life stat gains. It's also one of the most rewarding daily actions in the app.

In-app, the feature is called the Adventure Journal - framing your journaling as an adventurer keeping a log of their journey.

Why Journal

Beyond the obvious "reflect on your life" benefit, journaling in Scope has concrete mechanical effects:

  • XP - every entry grants avatar XP, scaled by length (longer entries earn more, up to a cap).
  • Silver - one silver coin per entry.
  • Arena tickets - any journal entry today unlocks four free arena tickets. No entry, no free tickets.
  • Real-life stats via AI analysis on daily entries - reflect on your run, get a Strength bump; reflect on resisting a craving, get Willpower.
  • Goal progress for entries linked to goals.

One two-sentence entry a day is enough to unlock the whole bundle.

Journal Types at a Glance

Scope has two entry formats and three entry purposes:

FormatPrompt Style
Free-writeOpen canvas - you pick the topic, you write
GuidedStructured question set - the app asks, you answer
PurposeWhen
Normal writeAnytime, unlimited per period
PlanStart of a period - one per period
RetrospectionEnd of a period - one per period

Any entry can combine a format and a purpose. A "weekly retrospection" is often guided; a "daily reflection" is often free-write. You pick what fits.

When Journals Show Up

Entries live in the Adventure Journal - a global list of everything you've written, filterable by period, format, purpose, or linked goal.

They also show up in specific contexts:

  • Lifegrid period cards - plan and retrospection slots appear on the relevant period cards, filled once you write an entry in that slot.
  • Goal detail pages - any journal linked to a goal appears in the goal's reflection section.

Daily Cap on Rewards

To prevent XP-farming, rewards are capped:

  • Ten entries per calendar day can earn XP and silver. Beyond the tenth, entries are still saved but pay nothing.
  • AI analysis can be run on up to three daily entries per day - each run targets a specific entry and grants its own stat bumps.

Most players hit maybe one or two entries a day. The cap is generous enough that it rarely matters; it exists to prevent abuse.
